How might we transform the environment to make clinical and system interactions more personally impactful for people living with epilepsy?
An investigation into Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurring seizures, affecting approximately 1 in 26 people. Despite its prevalence, a great deal remains unknown about the condition as its presentation can be unique to the person it affects — making it not only difficult to treat, but also to understand.
Discovery through Participatory Design
In partnership with a leading epilepsy industry collaborator, Partners Connected Health set out to address the top issues affecting the epilepsy community. An advisory panel involving a patient, a doctor and a community advocate was assembled to not only inform the direction of the work but also play an active role in the generation and fine-tune development of the ideas being explored.
Woes of transportation
An epilepsy diagnosis can lead to the loss of a driver’s license. Losing the ability to drive can jeopardize personal independence, threaten job security, decrease social interaction, and add financial strain; making the challenge of transportation one of the most persistent and frequently cited pain points for people living with epilepsy.
“My doctors have told me to not drive for 6 months, but c'mon... I have a job. I need to drive eventually. I cannot rely on others 24/7.”

A shared toll
Transportation barriers affect assess to care, which contributes to poorer health outcomes and further escalates costs for both patients and healthcare systems. Individual providers also feel the pinch as each unused 60-minute time slot costs an average of $200. Taken collectively, this equates to a loss of $150 billion annually in the US.
A new ride-sharing model
Radius proposes a new way to meet the needs of transportation for patients, providers, and healthcare systems. Radius's free NEMT service is sponsored by healthcare organizations that helps them recover lost revenue while improving health outcomes for the vulnerable populations they serve.
Radius's general transportation service is a public offering that also provides discounted fares to eligible riders with a medical condition that prohibits them from driving, such as epilepsy, blindness, arrhythmia, Parkinson disease or dementia.
Radius’s general transportation service offers monthly subscription plans based on 'tiered-mile' packages, ranging from 50 to 400 miles. Miles come with no strings attached and do not expire, but roll over into the following month.
The gift of transportation
Miles can also be purchased as independent packages and gifted to other Radius riders as mile credits.
Marrying transportation with improved quality of care
Radius doesn't just provide a ride to and from medical appointments. It is a healthcare integrated service designed to complement and improve care. Its platform features a clinical portal that allows care teams to better communicate with their patients before and after their visits.
New Take on a Familiar Story
An integrated service
The following storyboard illustrates Radius's healthcare system integration and NEMT as told through the eyes of John, a typical patient who is about to learn he has a serious medical condition.
Prescription for transportation
With a doctor's prescription, John has access to Radius's free medical transportation, along with discounted general transportation.
Following his appointment, John's care team is able to enroll him in Radius and reserve transportation for him in advance of his next visit.
3 days ahead of John's next appointment, Radius automatically reaches out to him to confirm his availability.
Immediately following his appointment confirmation, Radius prompts John to share the top concerns he'd like to discuss with his doctor during his visit.
John’s concerns are immediately shared with his care team via secure messaging.
The day of
Radius alerts John on the day of his appointment to confirm the time and location of his transportation pick up. When en route, Radius is able to relay John's estimated time of arrival to his care team while prompting him to organize his thoughts ahead of his appointment.
Should the clinic be running behind schedule, Radius can alert John of the delay and give him the option to postpone his pick up time — creating a more efficient and frictionless experience for both John and his care team.
Visit follow up
Following John's appointment, Radius checks in with him to inquire about his visit and collect any questions he may have for his care team to follow up with him on.
Minding the gap
By providing both free NEMT and affordable general transportation, Radius works to improve access to care, optimize system-wide cost savings, and improve the quality of life for all its users.
